A failure to lift a fifth Wanamaker Trophy here on Sunday would mean four blank years; an entire fleet of missed opportunities.

Of course, he has contributed to his fall from dominance but there have been extenuating factors. In a rare moment of candour he admitted on Tuesday that it was harder to win a major than when he was at his peak a decade ago.

“It is because the fields are so much deeper than they used to be,“ he said. “There’s so many guys with a chance to win. And it’s only going to continue getting that way.”

Even for this positive thinker, the evidence is hard to ignore.

For the first time in 25 years, 16 majors in succession have been won by 16 different golfers. Nine of these have been first-time winners. The glass ceiling is flimsier than cellophane.
